This fantastic trip takes you from the low swelter
of the Amazon to the cool heights of the mighty Andes.
Travel through the jungle
by foot and by motorized canoe before ascending to
the home of the ancient Inca people and the legendary
ruins of Machu Picchu.
We leave Lima straight away and
fly to the Amazon over the snow-capped mountains that
so majestically divide this region. From Puerto Maldonado,
it is a short journey upriver that takes us to our
lodge surrounded by the richness of the jungle. Spend
the days with a local guide as you hike and swim under
a dense canopy and spend the evenings socializing
with the resident naturalists.
Fly from the rainforest to the cultural
heart of Andean Peru--Cusco. Our first day here will
be relaxed to allow the body time to adjust to the
thin mountain air. Roam the narrow, cobblestone streets
and absorb the unique sights and smells of this historic
city. Once acclimated, we will explore the local ruins
and Inca sites.
From Cusco it is on to the highly
anticipated Machu Picchu. We take an unforgettable
train trip down the rugged canyon of the Urubamba
River to the lush "high jungle zone" that
hosts this famous testament to Inca architectural
prowess. Spend two days in and around the ruins visiting
hot springs, hiking in the overlooking mountains and
snapping unforgettable photographs.
Venturing upward in elevation to
the Peruvian altiplano and Lake Titicaca; we will
view alpacas and llamas and out on the lake, we will
overnight with a native family on Taquile Island.
Travelling southeast into Bolivia along the lakeshore,
we stop at Tiahuanaco, a pre Inca city famous for
its Subterranean Temple with its gallery of stone
skulls embedded into the walls. Next is La Paz, the
highest capital city in the world. Explore this citys
many markets looking for a good luck charm or a love
potion from Witchs Alley.
This incredible city built on a
mountain side offers surreal and gorgeous views-have
a drink from the rooftop restaurant at the Plaza Hotel
where one poetic visitor described the city lights
as "being spread out below like an inverted bowl
of stars."
Back to the lake and to Peru, we
make a final stop in Copacabana, another pre-Inca
site and home to the shrine of the Dark Virgin of
the Lake, the most revered Catholic image in Bolivia.
We overnight in Puno before taking a flight to Lima
over sublime mountain peaks with steamy jungles just
out of view to the east.
