A marvellous diversity of natural wonders are found
throughout this trek... ranging from thermal geysers
and
massive stone arches to the glacial carved walls of
the
Yosemite Valley.
This journey starts with a
trip into the heart of the Cascade Mountains, proud
home of Mt. Rainier National Park. We'll pass glistening
waterfalls and wonderful old growth forests on an
ascent to the many spectacular vistas this massive
snow and ice-capped volcano has to offer.
There is time for a short,
late afternoon walk on the first day, with the following
day completely devoted to exploring the park's great
variety of trails. Then retrace Lewis & Clark's
path across the historic Columbia River en route to
the Big Sky cowboy country of Montana. Enjoy a night
under a brilliant blanket of stars in the American
Rockies, before reaching Yellowstone National Park
for a glorious three-night stay.
View explosive geysers and
colourful waterfalls while exploring the world's oldest
and most famous national park. Keep your eyes peeled
for the abundant wildlife. Large herds of bison and
elk roam the park and bears and wolves are also present.
Test your hiking skills on the Uncle Tom's Trail for
an unforgettable approach to the mighty Lower Yellowstone
Falls.
Grand Teton National Park
is a short drive away. The mountains here rise up
sharply from the surrounding valley (known as Jackson
Hole). Our walks here allow you to either meander
the shores of pretty alpine lakes beneath the Teton
Mountains or to head uphill for outstanding panoramic
views. Next, we cross into Idaho for an opportunity
to walk amongst the moon-like lava formations of Craters
of the Moon National Monument. Our
nightstop is Nat-So-Pah Hot Springs, camping and soaking
in the pools Native Americans have frequented for
centuries.
A desolate, but strangely
beautiful drive through Nevada's northern desert plateau
brings us to the Sierra Nevada Mountains and Lake
Tahoe, nestled like a jewel on the California/Nevada
border. Hike one of
the many trails in the area; most offer spectacular
views of the crystal-clear deep blue waters of the
lake and the majestic peaks that surround it. Enjoy
a colourful sunset while sipping champagne on an optional
catamaran cruise on the lake and later try your luck
in Caesar's Palace Casino before heading south to
the amazing Yosemite National Park region that will
be our home for the next three nights.
Many trails can take you to
some of the highest and grandest waterfalls in North
America and Half Dome and El Capitan, the most famous
of the park's granite formations, provide majestic
backdrops that will be etched in your mind forever.
Alternative activities include bicycling in the valley
or floating down the Merced River. Visit Mariposa
Grove with its towering Sequoia trees before proceeding
through California's historic gold country to the
"City by the "Bay"-San Francisco.
End this special adventure
with a tour through the gracious neighbourhoods that
make San Francisco such a treat-Chinatown, Little
Italy, The Wharf, Nob Hill, Alamo Square and Golden
Gate Park. A dream-like view of the city during your
last walk, a stroll across the Golden Gate Bridge,
offers a fitting close to this perfect walking tour.
